queso mahonIn a 5th century letter, a Bishop called Severo proclaimed that “an excellent chesse produced by the islanders” is consumed in Menorca. Today is the best-know culinary product. Though cheese is made all over the island, it has all been designated Mahón cheese. Finally after a long process, the Mahon cheese received its recognition as a denomination of origin in 1985.

The Xoriger gin is the most famous of those distilled on the island, and their cellar in Port of Mahon are open to the public. Gin Xoriger began to be distilled in Menorca, during the years of British rule from 1708 to 1802.

Influences on Minorca food and drink are wide and varied, and pull considerably from traditional recipes and roots which stretch back to medieval times, and with a touch of Catalan and Arabic influence thrown in. Cakes and pastries are particular specialities on Menorca, influenced by Muslim, Catalan and British settlement over the centuries.
