Prehistoric Menorca Culture

Menorca owes a significant part of its present day appeal to its rich history. Settlements can be traced back to the Bronze Age, 2000 B.C. and man was possibly living in Menorca even further back – as far as 5,000 years ago.  Prehistoric Menorca was subject to the influence of many Mediterranean cultures. These influences led to the Talayotic period which today can be seen in the form monuments, such as Taula, megalithic tombs and the collective tombs known as Navetas.

A taula (meaning table in Catalan) is a T-shaped stone monument found on the Balearic island of Minorca. Taulas can be up to 5 metres high and consist of a vertical pillar (a monolith or several smaller stones on top of each other) with a horizontal stone lying on it. A U-shaped wall often encloses the structure. They were built by the Talayotic culture between 1000 BC and 300 BC. May well have been used for ceremonial purposes but certainly formed a normal element of the habitations associated with the Talayots.

Talatí de Dalt is one of the most remarkable prehistoric villages on Menorca. It seems that the Talatí de Dalt was inhabited after the Bronze Age and it reached its maximum splendour between the 4th and 2nd centuries before Christ, a time when the Punic civilization traded with the Talayotic tribes around the Balearic Islands.

Another feature of prehistoric Menorca, and one of its most famous monuments, is the communal burial structure known as a Naveta. The best example is the Naveta d’es Tudons which dates from around 1300 BC it is believed to be the oldest roofed building in Europe.
